Cochrane Technologies Supports University of Louisiana Satellite Team

At this time next year, a team of engineering students at the University of Louisiana will gather inside a lab to wait for the first signs of life from their Picosatellite. The satellite, Cajun Advanced Picosatellite Experiment – CAPE, is schedule for launch next December from the International Space Company Kosmotras located in the Republic of Kazakhstan. CAPE1 will be placed in a low earth orbit approximately 500 miles outside the Earth’s atmosphere. If successful the team will be the first student group in Louisiana to design, build, and launch a satellite into orbit.

Joining the C.A.P.E. team will be Cochrane Technologies. Cochrane Technologies, located in Broussard, LA, is a leader in the global positioning industry. With the donation from Cochrane Technologies, the C.A.P.E team is one step closer to reaching its goal for the cost of the launch.
“As a native of Louisiana and the Lafayette region specifically, I am excited to see Cochrane Technologies support the local community,” said Cochrane Technologies President Doug Cochrane. "We felt that supporting the C.A.P.E. project and particularly the students working on this communication project, as they explore the field of satellite communications was a great way to give back and get involved with the activities of our hometown university.”

Through the project, engineering students at the university will research, design, build, and launch an earth orbiting satellite about the size of a soccer ball. The satellite will be launched on a Russian ICBM and will perform various engineering experiments which include temperature readings, radiation measurements, and solar pressure measurements. CAPE1 will also have the capability of taking photos of itself while in orbit. All of the data collected will be continuously processed by the satellite on transmit back to the ground station on the university campus, where the C.A.P.E. can process and learn from the data. “This project is a valuable educational experience for the students, requiring an application of engineering, business, and management skills. This high level project is excellent exposure for the students, department and university.” Dr. Robert R. Henry, EECE Department Head.
